KUCHING, Feb 8: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has urged authorities and the public to ensure that sports facilities in Sarawak are fully utilised, warning against leaving stadiums and venues as mere symbols of development without meaningful activities.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the fourth Sarawak Games (SUKSAR) 2026 today, the Premier said the State government has invested heavily in sports infrastructure, which must benefit schools, youth, and the wider community.

“Do not just build stadiums without using them. Open stadiums and fields to schools. Facilities must be fully utilised,” he said.

Abang Johari stressed that while the construction of stadiums and sports venues requires substantial investment, their true value is realised only when actively used by the community.

He added that sports development is closely linked to economic and social progress, highlighting the dual benefits of a strong sports ecosystem.

“Sports infrastructure is a public asset. Every stadium, field and venue built with State funds belongs to the people of Sarawak, and its benefits should be maximised for schools, youth programmes, and community activities.

“Our investment in sports facilities is not just about buildings. It is about giving our children and youth the opportunities to grow, compete, and lead healthy lives,” he said. — DayakDaily
