KUCHING, July 24: More than 20,000 information and communications technology (ICT) devices have been supplied to schools throughout Sarawak from 2021 to 2023, including laptops, smartboards and smart TVs, in a nationwide push to digitise education, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Deputy Minister of Education Wong Kah Woh said five secondary schools in Sarawak have been equipped with education technology tools such as smartboards and smart TVs under the Projek Rintis Kelas Hibrid Pintar (Smart Hybrid Classroom Pilot Project), which aims to modernise teaching and learning in line with 21st-century education needs.

“A total of 17,779 laptops have been provided for use in school computer labs across Sarawak over the period between 2021 and 2023,” he said.

Other devices supplied include 905 printers, 888 projectors and 754 card chargers.

“In total, 20,346 ICT devices for computer labs have been distributed to Sarawak,” he added when replying to Ahmad Johnie Zawawi (GPS–Igan), who had asked about the number of primary and secondary schools in Sarawak that have received smartboards and other devices, and what plans are in place to ensure rural schools are not left behind in Malaysia’s digital education agenda.

Wong further said the Ministry is currently upgrading 384 Centres of Excellence, including Teacher Activity Centres (Pusat Kegiatan Guru) nationwide.

“This project aims to strengthen infrastructure and technology access to serve as reference and training centres for digital education for teachers and school communities, including in Sarawak,” he said. — DayakDaily
