KUCHING, Apr 18: Upgrading works at Desa Ilmu Lake Park have reached 97.86 per cent physical progress, placing the project in its final stage ahead of its opening as a new recreational and economic focal point in Samarahan.
The development also includes a planned RM2 million Phase 1 commercial stall project near the Jalan Desa Ilmu junction, aimed at supporting local small traders and generating economic opportunities through designated spaces for entrepreneurs.
According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), the project under the Integrated Regional Samarahan Development Agency (IRSDA) is part of ongoing efforts to enhance public spaces commonly used by residents for leisure, particularly during mornings and evenings.
Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development and Kota Samarahan MP Datuk Rubiah Wang said the upgrading works aim to improve comfort, safety and accessibility while strengthening the park’s role as a community hub.
She said key components include upgraded jogging and walking paths, new public toilet facilities, a grandstand for community use, and landscaping works incorporating local identity elements, including a design inspired by the traditional river taxi (perahu tambang).
“The design approach aims to give the park a distinct identity while making it a more structured and attractive public space for families and visitors,” she said.
She added that cleanliness, safety and maintenance will continue to be prioritised to ensure the park remains a well-managed and sustainable public space. — DayakDaily
