KUCHING, Jan 10: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian has fallen victim to the dark side of artificial intelligence (AI) whereby a fake video or deepfake of him has been used to promote potentially harmful medicine.
In a Facebook post on January 8, Dr Sim said a Facebook page titled ‘Ilike Fitness’ used AI technology to mimic his voice and image from an old interview he did in 2020.
“The deepfake video features a ‘fake’ Dr Sim giving testimonials and speaking of a fictional ‘new formula’ to help patients cure and (be) ‘free from arthritis forever’.
“There is no such thing. It is not only promoting false medical information, it is also scamming social media users to part with their money, and selling an illegal and potentially harmful fake medicine or treatment,” he said.
Therefore, Dr Sim reminded the public to be wary of deepfakes and AI on social media, telling them to be vigilant as this is not the first time such an incident has happened, nor will it be the last.
The video also featured Malaysian Idol winner, Jaclyn Victor.
