KUCHING, Dec 3: Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas has cautioned Sarawakians to be wary of those spreading so called “ideas” or professional opinions” on social media for personal gains at the expense of Sarawak’s unity and harmony.
International recognition and successes Sarawak is enjoying today, he said, are the fruits of Sarawakians’ culture of tolerance, peace, and mutual respect.
“But let us also be mindful. Times are changing. And with success comes attention, not all of it supportive. Our unity in Malaysia, and especially in Sarawak, is sacred.
“We must not fall prey to negativity, incitement, misinformation, or provocations by external forces seeking to divide us. As the saying goes, ‘Air yang tenang jangan disangka tiada buaya’ (Don’t underestimate a situation just because things appear to be quiet and calm).
“There are those out there spreading their so-called “ideas” or “professional opinions” through news platforms and podcasts. They may sound entertaining, but remember, they have nothing to lose, yet everything to gain.
“They gain listeners, followers, subscribers…while we risk losing something far more precious: trust among ourselves, respect for one another, and the love that holds our communities together,” said Uggah while delivering ministerial winding up speech during Sarawak Legislature at the Sarawak Legislative Complex here today.
He said with the full support of Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, many of Sarawak’s long-standing river-crossing challenges are being resolved through the implementation of major bridges.
“Let us not fall into their trap. Let us reject these divisive antics and instead continue moving forward, together, especially in these uncertain times,” said Uggah who is also Deputy Premier.
He said Sarawak has lived in harmony for generations. Sarawakians must safeguard this peace for their children and more generations to come.
To him, unity is the backbone of Sarawak’s development agenda, the foundation of Sarawak’s sustainability, and the key to achieving Sarawakians’ long-term goals.
“With unity, no one can stop us. With unity, we can achieve far more. With unity, we will build a prosperous, safe, and cohesive Sarawak, where no one is left behind,” said Uggah —DayakDaily
