KUCHING, Sept 4: Sarawak can sell electricity to West Malaysia as long as the latter is willing to pay more than RM1 per kilowatt (kWh) like Singapore, says Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian.
He said Sarawak will potentially produce hydropower capacity of up to 8,000 megawatts by 2030, adding that the State is already selling renewable energy to Indonesia and, next, Singapore.
“However, whether we are going to sell to West Malaysia or not, it all depends on your dollar (money).
“One kilowatt (kWh) of electricity for domestic usage in Sarawak costs about 25 sen (RM0.25), but selling to Singapore, 1 kWh is more than RM1.
“So if West Malaysia wants to pay more than RM1, we will sell (the electricity),” he said when delivering a special luncheon address at the 2023 World Green & Sustainability Summit held at UCSI Hotel here earlier today.
Dr Sim, who is also Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Sarawak (MPHLG), further argued that West Malaysia would not get the same rate applied in Sarawak—25 sen per kWh—because they are not Sarawakians.
“Otherwise, how will I explain to the people (of Sarawak)? I am voted by the people here.
“They (West Malaysia) don’t want to (buy) RM1 electricity rate and want to buy at 25 sen, but are they Sarawakians?” he questioned. — DayakDaily
