KUCHING, April 14: Sarawak will be the first in the country to provide palliative care training for its healthcare workers, says Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian.

According to a news report from Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) today, Dr Sim said it is an essential step towards improving the healthcare system for the people and ensuring that both rural and urban patients receive the best care.

“Any Sarawakian, whether they are in rural or urban areas, has the right to equal access to healthcare,” he said during the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Asia Pacific Hospice Palliative Care Network (APHN), who will provide the training, here yesterday (April 13).

Meanwhile, in a Facebook post yesterday, Dr Sim said the training is under the APHN flagship programme, the Lien Collaborative for Palliative Care.

The Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister said the significant agreement marks a milestone in promoting and providing palliative care services throughout Sarawak.

“This training programme aims to equip healthcare workers with the skills and knowledge required for providing holistic palliative care to patients suffering from life-limiting illnesses,” he added. — DayakDaily
