KUCHING, July 1: Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian is urging the relevant authorities to consider holding a safety campaign to educate road users on safety while driving on the Pan Borneo Highway.
Dr Sim in a Facebook post yesterday (June 30) said the Pan Borneo Highway is not the same as the ‘kampung road’ standard that everyone was used to previously.
According to him, during his recent travels to attend a Ngiling Bidai event in Lundu, the stretch of Pan Borneo Highway from Kuching to Kampung Bukit Papan is as good as any overseas standard except that in Sarawak, it is toll free.
“Unfortunately was told about many serious motor car accidents. Not surprised as I had said many times, once Pan Borneo Highway is completed, the accident rate involving motorists will be high in Sarawak,” he said.
He said unlike the North South Highways in Peninsular Malaysia where medical specialists and trauma teams are prepared for the whole length of the highway, in Sarawak, the full trauma teams are only stationed in Kuching.
He added that is why Sarawak is negotiating for health autonomy under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) to cater for the State’s needs. — DayakDaily
