KUCHING, Sept 2: Given that the RPR Batu Kawa houses destroyed by a recent fire will require some time for reconstruction, Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian is prepared to facilitate temporary accommodation for the affected victims at HDC flat, should the need arise.
Dr Sim emphasised the availability of government flats under the Ministry of Housing and assured that if the fire-affected victims require assistance and express their wishes, he can coordinate their temporary stay in HDC flats to address their accommodation challenges.
“Rebuilding homes is not something that can be done in one or two days, and staying in an evacuation centre is not a long-term solution.
“Hence, the best way is to temporarily stay at the HDC flat provided and return to their homes only after the reconstruction is completed,” he said in a statement yesterday (Sept 1).
Drawing upon the recent example of the Segoban longhouse fire, Dr Sim shared that the fire victims were relocated to the 18 Mile HDC Flats in Batu Gong, where the authorities also provided them with essential amenities and services.
“If the fire victims of RPR Batu Kawa need such arrangements, they can register with the local community leaders, and the authorities will make arrangements as soon as possible,” he added.
Dr Sim made a second visit to the RPR Batu Kawa fire site on Thursday (Aug 31), during which he disbursed additional financial assistance to the fire victims.
Subsequently, he attended an event at the evacuation centre where he witnessed the Federation of Kuching and Samarahan Division Chinese Association’s donation ceremony for the fire victims.
He expressed his gratitude to the association led by its president Datuk Richard Wee for their swift response in providing essential supplies, including mattresses.
Dr Sim also extended his appreciation and gratitude to Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), Health Department, Welfare Department and all other personnel who diligently served at the evacuation centre during this challenging time. — DayakDaily
