KUCHING, Jan 16: Deputy Premier of Sarawak Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian emphasised the continued significance of mainstream media in delivering accurate and reliable news to the community.

Dr Sim stated this today during a media appreciation ceremony organised by the Federation of Chinese Associations Kuching, Samarahan, and Serian Divisions at its headquarters here.

“Even though the community currently relies on social media for news, mainstream media platforms are still required, particularly in dealing with the issue of fake news.

“Therefore, the mainstream media will continue to play an important role because of its professionalism and credibility,” he explained.

He continued by stating that social media is also significant in the modern era because it is the primary platform for the community to stay informed of current events.

Dr Sim also stated that there must be a limit to freedom of speech on social media.

“We must not abuse our freedom of speech on social media, or we will face unthinkable consequences,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, Federation of Chinese Associations Kuching, Samarahan, and Serian Divisions president Datuk Richard Wee mentioned that the media appreciation ceremony was held to express his gratitude for the mainstream media’s support of the federation.

The ceremony involved the distribution of ang pao (red packets) and mandarin oranges in conjunction with Chinese New Year to 15 Sarawak media agencies.

Also present was Wee’s wife and Sarawak Culinary Heritage and Arts (SCA) chairwoman, Datin Donna Drury Wee. — DayakDaily
