KUCHING, April 3: All local council members are appointed by the Sarawak government and not by component parties, says Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian.

According to a news report from Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) today, Dr Sim, who is also Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, said members of the local councils are the frontliners who come face to face with people in need of assistance, and solve arising issues.

“Council members also play a role in channeling every issue and problem raised through the right channels such as government departments and agencies to ensure quick and effective action can be taken immediately,” he said in his speech during the swearing-in ceremony for Meradong and Julau councillors, in the Meradong and Julau Districts Council meeting room today.

He added the newly appointed councilors also need to be proficiently knowledgeable about various government policies so that the latest information can be conveyed to the people, at the same time improving the government’s image as it heads towards achieving developed status.

A total of 32 individuals have been appointed and sworn in as SDC Councilors for the 2023-2025 term, of which 15 are new faces and 17 have been re-appointed. — DayakDaily
