SIBU, Jan 11: The integration of the Green Building Index (GBI) into the Buildings Ordinance is expected to be tabled in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting this year, says Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) news report today, Dr Sim said that it is part of the State’s move towards environmental sustainability.
Dr Sim, who is the Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has mandated that the GBI must be incorporated into the ordinance.
He said the GBI will monitor all processes and building features, including construction materials, to certify buildings as green and environmentally friendly.
“The GBI does not only assess completed buildings but also evaluates the entire ecosystem, including the cement used in construction.
“You (property developers) may have a very green building, but if your cement is not environmentally friendly, you need to look at your energy production—whether it is eco-friendly or not,” he said during the launch of d’Isabelle, Sarawak’s first green condominium, at a prominent hotel today.
Dr Sim added that the proposed changes to the Buildings Ordinance will transform the approach to development in Sarawak, aligning with the region’s goals of sustainable and eco-friendly progress. — DayakDaily
