KUCHING, Oct 5: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan urged Sarawak Energy to explain the sudden spike in electricity bills, especially for business premises, following the installation of the smart meter.
According to a news report from TVS today, Awang Tengah said that there is currently no change in rates for domestic and commercial consumption.
“Although there are no changes in terms of rate, Sarawak Energy need to explain the transition aspect of the method (from old meter to smart meter).
“I hope the Ministry of Utilities and Telecommunication and Sarawak Energy will address this matter,” he was quoted by TVS as saying.
In a statement previously, Sarawak Energy explained that the increase in electricity bills faced by consumers recently was due to the smart meter’s capability to record the amount of electrical usage accurately.
The statement also said that the increased amount is also due to an ‘undercharge’ reading by old meters and seasonal changes in energy consumption. — DayakDaily
