BETONG, Jan 20: By hook or by crook, the tourism project to construct a replica of Kubu Rentap, the fortress of legendary Iban leader Rentap, will begin this year, says Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
According to the Deputy Premier, the project is awaiting final approval from the relevant authorities with RM16 million approved and will be constructed at Bukit Sadok.
The project, he said, is set to develop Betong’s tourism sector alongside modern agriculture.
“There is a lot Betong can offer but we need to re-strategise our development and promotion.
“The Betong Division Development Agency (BDDA) and the Resident and District Offices will have leading roles to play with industry players,” he said at the Betong District Council’s appreciation night for its officers at Dewan Tan Sri Datuk Amar Stephen Kalong Ningkan hall last night (Jan 19).
He added that Betong is now easily reachable through the Pan Borneo Highway, and with the completion of the Coastal Trunk Road and the Bebuling short take-off and landing (STOL) port in Spaoh, more visitors are expected which will benefit the local business community.
Therefore, he urged everyone to play their part in keeping their respective areas visitor-friendly.
He also urged council officers to do their best in serving the people and constantly look for ways to upgrade themselves and embrace change. — DayakDaily
