KUCHING, June 8: Punang is poised for major transformation, with several key development projects set to elevate its status as a new tourism and economic hub in northern Sarawak.

According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) report, the Kampung Punang Floating Mosque project, located in the Lawas coastal area, is nearly complete and poised to become a new landmark and tourist attraction.

Deputy Premier and Bukit Sari assemblyman Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan stated that the project, which costs RM6.8 million, has achieved a completion rate of 99.6 per cent and is now awaiting the final touches in terms of interior decoration.

“I have suggested a few improvements for the mosque’s interior, including a space to hold ceremonies and religious activities,” he said in a press conference after visiting the project site at Kampung Punang on Saturday (June 7).

Meanwhile, Awang Tengah also announced that the Punang Waterfront project will begin next year.

“I have been briefed on the project that has been taken over by the Regional Corridor Development Authority (RECODA). I have given instructions so that the project can be implemented next year,” he said, adding that the cost has not yet been confirmed.

At the same time, he also noted that the area has its own attractions, including the beach and sea, traditional villages, local cuisine, and culture, which will draw in tourists.

Awang Tengah said that the area’s development will be strengthened with the construction of a road connecting Kuala Lawas with Punang and Kampung Awat-Awat, which will connect to the new Lawas Airport.

He added that a master plan has been developed to enhance the area, including the construction of a tourist resort and other infrastructure facilities.

“This development will open economic opportunities for the small and medium entrepreneurs (SMEs). The community should seize the chance to improve their living standards and income,” he said. — DayakDaily
