SIBU, Aug 25: Sarawak will continue to use English to teach Science and Mathematics subjects in schools regardless of any change in policy by the Federal Government, says Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee.
āThe Sarawak government will never go back to teaching the two subjects in Bahasa Malaysia. Last time, we taught Mathematics and Science in English, but changed it again to Bahasa Malaysia (due to a change in policy),” Dr Annuar told reporters today after officiating at the Postponement of Sarawak Zone KV Skills Competition at Sibu Vocational College.
āWe were given the opportunity four years ago to revert back to the original policy (to teach in English). I can guarantee that by hook or by crook we will proceed teaching the subjects in English,ā said Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee today.
He was asked for his response to a statement made by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who asked the government to revert to using English as the teaching language for Science and Mathematics subjects in schools.
“Whatever new policy made on the matter by the Federal Government, Sarawak will continue to teach the two subjects in English,” he asserted.
The Nangka Assemblyman said Sarawak has been using English since the implementation of its Dual Language Programme (DLP) in 2019.
It has also spent RM18 million on facilities for the teaching of Science and Mathematics subjects in schools, training of teachers and books. ā DayakDaily
