KUCHING, Aug 29: Sarawak has recorded 11 whooping cough or pertussis cases so far this year.

Out of the total, Kapit recorded 4 cases, followed by Miri (3), Bintulu (2), Sibu (1) and Kuching (1).

Malaysian Deputy Health Minister Lukanisman Awang Sauni said however, none of the cases are critical.

He also mentioned that out of 343 total pertussis cases reported in Malaysia as of Aug 28, 2023, 24 cases resulted in death and 173 involved newborns below the age of five months.

“From here, we can see that there is a need for us to create awareness on vaccination for babies.

“We also hope to work together with the media to promote the need to vaccinate babies as early as possible because we have to accept the fact that there are anti-vaccine groups among Malaysians as well as parents who are unaware on what to do after giving birth and lacked the knowledge on getting the vaccine,” he told a press conference after officiating C-Hat Intervention in Schools project kick-off at SK St Thomas here today. — DayakDaily
