Deputy Minister: Sarawak now Federal government’s reference point for carbon trading, storage

Dr. Hazland Abang Hipni

KUCHING, May 12: The Federal government now uses Sarawak as a reference point in regards to carbon trading and storage in Malaysia, says Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Dr Hazland Abang Hipni.

According to a news report from TV Sarawak (TVS) today, Dr Hazland said his ministry also has successfully obtained a license for carbon trading and storage last year.

“The carbon trading industry is something new in Malaysia and the Federal government also does not fully understand the industry,” he said during the Majlis Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri Meetsy held in Petra Jaya, today.

Dr Hazland added that he had to participate in several seminars and conferences related to the carbon trading and storage industry in several countries almost every month because the Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg wanted the latest information about the industry to be delivered to him immediately.

“Abang Johari also wants the carbon trading and storage industry to become a new source of income in order for Sarawak to become a successful region by 2030 through its sales tax, licensing and permits,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dr Hazland disclosed that one company has been granted the license for carbon trading in Sarawak.

“Apart from that, Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) was also issued with a license to trade,” he said. — DayakDaily
