KUCHING, Aug 3: Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Datuk Snowdan Lawan proposes two new categories of short animation films and short documentaries to be included in the next Asean International Film Festival And Awards (AIFFA) in 2026.
He said these categories could give young filmmakers and producers more opportunities to showcase their talent in the film industry.
“I had been approached by these young filmmakers and producers, asking if AIFFA could consider such categories in the future. It could help local film talent shine on the international stage.
“They can showcase their talent in 2D and 3D animation films and also allow young filmmakers who graduated from local institutions to progress in their careers.
“AIFFA is the place where their talent can be discovered. The idea is to expose these young talents to the film industry. I have discussed this proposal with AIFFA Festival Director Livan,” he told reporters during a press conference after launching’AIFFA BIZ-WORLD-Let’s do some business’ during the 6th AIFFA Edition in Kuching at the Old Court House.
Snowdan, who represented Dato Sri Abdul Rahman Karim Rahman Hamzah, went on to say that AIFFA could help them become competitive, recognised in their industry, and produce high-quality animation films.
He hoped that AIFFA BIZ-WORLD could be used by film industry experts to share their knowledge and experiences in the world of film.
“We have the Sarawak Film Collective (SFC), formed by several players in the local film and television creative industry, who have vast experience locally and internationally. Today, the SFC signed a memorandum of understanding with the Malindo Film Fund (MFF).
“In this MOU, our SFC will work together with MFF to identify who will be eligible to access this fund in Sarawak and in Borneo as well. It would be good for the industry players and give them business opportunities.
“Our job is for festivals like AIFFA to promote Sarawak overall, and we are glad to have players who know what Sarawak Government could offer in the film and creative industry,” he said.
Deputy Minister of Tourism Datuk Sebastian Ting, the Secretary-General of the Federation of Motion Picture Producers in the Asia Pacific (FPA), and President of the Malaysian Film Producers Association Suhan Pansha, AIFFA Festival Director Livan Tajang, and Executive Director Jaffr Amin Osman were among those present at the press conference.
