SIBU, June 19: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has expressed his intention to join the Sarawak Merdeka Convoy from Serian to Kota Samarahan, says Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu.
“This morning, I was informed that Abang Johari will join the ride from Serian to Kota Samarahan, and we are preparing for that,” said today.
Speaking to reporters during a pit stop of the convoy at Farley Supermarket, Gerald said a lot of interest is expected to be generated with the Premier joining the convoy.
On the public’s response to the convoy, Rentap said they had received positive feedback.
“The ‘Sarawak 60 Years Digital Exhibition’ in Sibu alone has garnered more than 6,000 visitors and was a big success. The ‘Rakyat Sihat, Sarawak Makmur’ Run yesterday (June 18) attracted 2,500 participants. Today, our programmes at Sibu Central Market and Farley Supermarket also received good responses.
“I think everyone can feel the sense of patriotism, and this is something that we must keep in our hearts because if we are not united, without independence, I do not think we are what we are today,” he said.
Rentap, who is also the Layar assemblyman, said that Sibu is a historical place as it holds great significance in the formation of Malaysia.
It was here that political leaders from Sarawak National Party (Snap), Parti Negara Sarawak (Panas), Barisan Rakyat Jati Sarawak (Barjasa), Sarawak Chinese Association (SCA), and Parti Pesaka Anak Sarawak (Pesaka) met and chose Sarawak’s independence through Malaysia.
“This is a good lesson, especially for the younger generations. Nothing happens just because it is. It is because of the hard work and sacrifices of our past leaders who wanted to see Sarawak grow and prosper,” he said.
Tomorrow (June 20), the convoy will have a pit stop at Sibu Jaya Pasar Tamu’ and later at Kanowit waterfront before proceeding to Song. — DayakDaily
