KUCHING, Sept 9: There is a high demand for nurses in critical and geriatric care in the country, and especially Sarawak, which is heading towards becoming an ‘ageing society’, says Deputy Minister of Health Lukanisman Awang Sauni.
As such, he advised trainees at the Training Institute of Malaysia Ministry of Health (ILKKM) to take up the post-basic diploma in critical care nursing.
Lukanisman disclosed that 310 trainees are going into intensive care nursing at ILKKM in the country this year, 48 for gerontology, and 51 for primary care.
“This field is not only limited to the doctors and specialists but also nursing staff, which are much needed,” he said to reporters during the Istiadat Konvokesyen 2023 ILKKM Zon Sarawak at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) today.
During the ceremony, 1,195 graduates received their scrolls.
Lukanisman also disclosed that the graduates who received their scrolls today had already been absorbed by the Ministry and added there is a high market for graduates from ILKKM in the private and public sectors.
This first session of the convocation today is for those from Sarawak to be followed by Sabah and West Malaysia.
A total of 8,643 graduated from 19 ILKKM institutions nationwide.
