KUCHING, Dec 13: Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh has assured the public that authorities are closely monitoring conditions at Niah Caves following recent flooding that raised concerns over visitor safety.
“From a safety perspective, we prioritise the safety of visitors everywhere, not just at Niah Caves but in all locations. We want to ensure the comfort and safety of visitors.
“We will assess the situation to make sure it does not become a problem for visitors or cause damage to existing assets, which this flood has severely affected families and also impacted Niah National Park,” he said to the reporters after officiating the Sustainability Within, Green Earth Beyond 2025 Programme at Surau Darul Hijrah today.
On the question of intervention measures, Len Talif said the floods are part of a global challenge and served as a reminder for everyone to play a role in protecting the environment.
“That is why we are reducing logging and planting more trees; this will prevent problems for future visitors.
“The situation is still under control. Even though the flood occurred, it is an isolated case. But to address the problem long-term, we must all play our part in taking care of our environment and using raw materials responsibly,” he said.
Len Talif also said the park’s Unesco World Heritage status would remain unaffected by the floods. — DayakDaily
