BINTULU, Oct 13: The Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) has been urged to prioritise the deepening of Sungai Sebiew before proceeding with the proposed RM50 million drainage upgrade to tackle Bintulu’s long-standing flooding issues.
In a Facebook post, Bintulu MP Dato Sri Tiong King Sing said Sungai Sebiew serves as a major rainwater discharge channel for various parts of Bintulu.
Without improving its discharge capacity, he said, upgrading the drainage system alone may not achieve the desired results.
“The estimated cost of deepening and upgrading Sungai Sebiew is around RM200 million. We are working to secure the additional funding needed to carry out this crucial work,” he said.
Speaking on his attendance at the 2026 Sarawak Housing and Real Estate Developers’ Association (SHEDA) Home and Property Roadshow Bintulu, Tiong, also the federal Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, stressed that development must prioritise quality, strong foundations, and durable homes while creating better-planned communities with proper facilities and a safe living environment.
“Our priority is to ensure that every ringgit spent delivers meaningful and lasting benefits to the people.
“By addressing the root causes of flooding and strengthening our drainage infrastructure, we can work towards a safer, more resilient, and liveable Bintulu for our communities,” he said. — DayakDaily
