KUCHING, Dec 22: The installation of five smart poles by Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) not only enhances the aesthetics of the Kuching Waterfront but also aligns with Sarawak’s vision of becoming a smart region.
In a news report by TVS, Deputy Minister of Utility Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi highlighted that the smart poles, beyond their role as lighting fixtures, serve as communication hubs and provide essential information to visitors.
“In 2023, DBKU was recognised as a Smart City Adopter for its initiatives in advancing smart city projects. This recognition came with a special allocation of RM200,000 from the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT).
“The funding, provided through KPKT’s BP.1 allocation, facilitated the installation of five smart poles at the Kuching Waterfront. The project began on Aug 19 and was completed on Nov 18,” he said during a press conference following the official launch of DBKU’s smart poles at the Kuching Waterfront on Saturday (Dec 21).
He noted that improved lighting would help visitors better navigate pathways and appreciate historical landmarks along the Kuching Waterfront.
These high-tech poles feature energy-efficient LED lights, digital signage, security cameras, public Wi-Fi support, and weather-resistant designs adorned with Sarawakian cultural motifs.
DBKU Mayor Dato Hilmy Othman was also present at the event. — DayakDaily
