KUCHING, Sept 18: Dayang Nurjihan Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari, the newly appointed patron of the Sarawak Orchid Society (SARORSO), has described orchids as a cherished symbol of her family’s memories, especially those tied to her late mother.
In a TVS news report, she shared that orchids were the favourite flower of her late mother, Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang, who passed away in June this year.
During her inaugural visit to the Orchid Laboratory at MARA Junior Science College (MRSM) Kuching today, Dayang Nurjihan was visibly moved by the students’ dedication in cultivating and restoring endangered orchid species.
“This is a very special experience for me. My late mother often reminded us to share the beauty of these orchids,” she said, adding that a passion for orchids has long been woven into her family’s life.
In honour of her mother’s legacy, Dayang Nurjihan agreed to continue her role as patron of SARORSO.
She also expressed appreciation to MRSM Kuching for spearheading the Juma’ani In Vitro Orchid Micropropagation (JIVOM) Project, which aims to conserve rare and endangered orchid species.
As part of her visit, Dayang Nurjihan toured the MRSM Kuching Orchid Garden, which houses over 80 orchid species, as well as the school’s propagation laboratory, demonstrating her support for student innovation in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics0 and biodiversity conservation.
