KUCHING, Aug 3: DayakDaily team has set off from Kuching carrying over 1,000 books and two big bags of soft toys in a four-wheel drive, to deliver to Sekapan children and youth in Belaga.
The project has been made possible due to the generous efforts and kindness of many, including Belaga assemblyman Datuk Liwan Lagang who is also Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunications, Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak), Ibraco Berhad and Pertubuhan Wartawan Bebas Kuching (Pewarta).
Out of the total of 1,012 books, BESarawak donated 850 while Pewarta contributed 54 books and 120 boxes of crayons. Meanwhile, DayakDaily managed to raise 108 books and quite a substantial of adorable soft toys thanks to donations from the public.
While handing over the books to DayakDaily on Aug 2, CEO of BESarawak Amelia Roziman said BESarawak is collaborating with DayakDaily to send books to Belaga as part of the bureau’s Books Build Legacy initiative.
“Books Build Legacy celebrates the diverse industries that advocate equality and inclusion of rural communities through book donations. We believe that every child has the right to be given the equal opportunities that successfully integrates them into modern society.”
“It is our hope that the availability of these books may encourage children to develop a love for reading and learning and by doing so, they can improve their academic performance and be given equal opportunities as they progress in life.
“It’s an opportunity for the business events industry to share its privilege with the younger generation.”
Amelia said the initiative is more than just to drive book donations from business events, but to lead the collective effort of developing rural communities in Sarawak through education.
“While it’s developed by BESarawak, it is a corporate social responsibility (initiative) for the entire industry and those outside of it, opening a golden window of opportunity for people to make a difference to Sarawak regardless of industry.”
She pointed out that the 850 books were sourced via various business events held in Sarawak and they bear testimony of the industry’s compassion and desire to make an impact beyond the event space.
The DayakDaily delivery team comprising journalists Christopher Bishop and Ling Hui are expected to arrive in Bintulu today, and in Belaga tomorrow.
