KUCHING, Aug 27: The authorities and policymakers have been called to engage with the Dayak community to rethink the legal status of cockfighting while also addressing ethical concerns.

In a press release, Dayak National Congress (DNC) deputy president George Young Si Ricord Junior pointed out that cockfighting has deep cultural roots and significance within the community in Sarawak, which is reflected in how it continues to draw interest despite years of persecution.

“It is clear that, even under the shadow of prohibitory laws, the tradition of cockfighting remains alive. These laws, imposed during the colonial era, are Western concepts that do not reflect the values and practices of the Dayak people.

“If there is still such a strong interest in this cultural game, perhaps it is time to reconsider its legal status. By legitimising cockfighting within a regulated framework, we could ensure that this important aspect of our heritage is preserved while also addressing any ethical concerns in a modern context,” he said.

He added that in a world where online gambling is rampant and nearly impossible to control, it seemed increasingly anachronistic to single out traditional practices like cockfighting for criminalisation.

“Instead of pushing these activities into the shadows, we should explore ways to bring them into the light, where they can be practised responsibly and in accordance with both cultural traditions and contemporary standards.

“I call upon the authorities and policymakers to engage with the Dayak community in an open dialogue about the future of our cultural practices.

“Together, we can find a path that honours our heritage while adapting to the realities of the modern world,” he said. — DayakDaily
