Dayak, Kadazandusun chambers, team up with BESarawak for major book donation drive to aid rural education

KUCHING, June 27: The Dayak Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) of Sarawak and the Kadazandusun Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI) of Sabah are collaborating with Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak) to host a major book donation drive in conjunction with the 15th Joint DCCI-KCCI Gawai-Kaamatan 2024 Celebration, demonstrating the power of regional collaboration in promoting literacy and community development.

According to a press release, the donation drive is part of Books Build Legacy, BESarawak’s State-level corporate social responsibility initiative to champion literacy and community development among Sarawak’s rural population.

“The special collaboration between DCCI, KCCI, and BESarawak aims to collect 1,000 books suitable for readers aged between five and 17 years of age in English and Malay languages,” the release stated.

The donation drive will take place at three key locations from July 1–2:

— Samarahan Country Club: July 1, 8am-2pm, in conjunction with the Gawai-Kaamatan Golf event.
— Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry Tower (Jalan Ong Tiang Swee): July 2, 8am-3pm, during the Business Forum and Networking Session.
— Level 5, Imperial Hotel Kuching: July 2, 6pm-9pm, as part of the Gawai-Kaamatan Celebration Dinner.

“Being the voice of native-led business communities is more than fostering economic growth.

“We must support the growth and development of our people and communities,” stated Datuk Dr Malcolm Mussen Lamoh, Deputy Minister for International Trade, Industry, and Investment (MINTRED) Sarawak.

He also emphasised the importance of the Books Build Legacy initiative in creating a positive societal impact and fostering unity between the Sarawak and Sabah chambers.

Amelia Roziman, chief executive officer (CEO) of BESarawak, highlighted the transformative power of the Books Build Legacy initiative.

“Books Build Legacy has transformed from a simple donation project to a significant partnership programme for diverse organisations to engage with local communities and contribute towards positive change.

“We aim to build a legacy of knowledge and opportunity for future generations by ensuring that education and literacy reach every corner of Sarawak.

“We are very eager to collaborate with more organisations to change the society and economy for the better,” she was quoted as saying.

The 15th Joint DCCI-KCCI Gawai-Kaamatan 2024 Celebration is supported by the Sarawak Dayak Graduates Association, Dayak Golf Association, BESarawak, and corporate partners Liquimoly East Malaysia Sdn Bhd and RT Cargo Sdn Bhd.
