KUCHING, Aug 13: Authorities in Sibu have taken down 8,175 illegal advertisements for unlicensed moneylenders since January this year, in what the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) describes as an ongoing and uncompromising crackdown on the increasingly bold loan shark syndicates.

SMC deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley said the council’s enforcement team has been working day and night to seize the illegal materials, proving the local authority’s determination to curb such illicit activities which have been spreading at an alarming rate.

“While the power of local authorities (PBT) is limited to the seizure of advertisements, our enforcement work is carried out consistently, both during the day and at night,” he said in a statement, as reported by TVS.

He stressed that strong cooperation between the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is crucial to track down and bring those responsible to justice.

“PDRM can initiate investigations into these cases, while MCMC plays an important role in tracing the telephone numbers displayed on the illegal advertisements,” he explained.

Mohammed Abdullah further revealed that the issue will be discussed in greater depth during the Inter-Agency Meeting scheduled for Aug 14, 2025, where stakeholders will work to design long-term strategies to combat the problem.

SMC also reminded the public not to be deceived by enticing offers from illegal moneylenders, and to promptly report any suspicious activities to the authorities to prevent falling victim to financial scams. — DayakDaily
