KUCHING, Dec 6: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has remanded a company director, who holds a “Datuk” title, and a civil servant on suspicion of corruption linked to securing construction projects in Sarawak worth approximately RM250 million.
According to a statement, the suspects, both males aged between their 40s and 50s, were arrested at about 5.30am on Thursday (Dec 5) when they presented themselves at at the MACC Sarawak office fo have their statements recorded.
Sources alleged that the duo conspired to facilitate several companies in securing construction projects awarded by the Public Works Office of a district in Sarawak.
The illicit activities are believed to have occurred between 2022 and 2024, involving kickbacks for the approval of construction projects worth an estimated RM250 million.
Both suspects also tested positive for methamphetamine, according to the source.
Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan approved a four-day remand order, effective from Thursday (Dec 5) to Dec 9, 2024, following an application by MACC at the Kuching Magistrate’s Court.
MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the arrests and stated that the case is being investigated under Section 17 of the MACC Act 2009.
He also hinted at the possibility of further arrests to assist in the investigation. — DayakDaily
