KUCHING, Sept 24: Sarawak’s mineral development must be rooted in rigorous science, sound governance and environmental stewardship rather than mere assumptions, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Sarawak Land and Survey Innovation and Integrity Day (HIITS) 2026 on Wednesday (Sept 23), he stressed that unlocking the State’s mineral potential requires a precise understanding of resource locations, commercial values and associated ecological risks.
“In this era of strategic minerals and rare earth elements, decisions cannot be made based on assumptions. They must be based on scientific data, accurate mapping, environmental assessment and clear governance,” he said.
Beyond data collection, the Premier underscored that research must yield practical, market-ready outcomes rather than gathering dust as academic exercises.
“Research cannot end as a report and be placed on a shelf. We have to apply what comes out of the research,” he asserted, pointing to the State’s progress in tropical medicine and algae research as prime benchmarks for translating scientific discovery into economic value.
To replicate that success in the mineral sector, Abang Johari urged local institutions and agencies to embrace a culture of exploring “uncharted waters,” effectively bridging the gap between raw exploration and industrial application.
This push aligns with Sarawak’s broader strategy to move beyond basic resource extraction towards high-value downstream industries.
The State is actively prioritising specialised expertise, particularly metallurgists and resource scientists, to process rare earth elements into advanced components such as gallium nitride and super magnets, ensuring its mineral wealth powers sustainable, long-term technological growth. — DayakDaily
