KUCHING, Nov 27: Daro assemblyman Safiee Ahmad has slammed former Federal law minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim for his viral video labelling Sabah and Sarawak as a “burden” and suggesting that the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) be cancelled, calling the remarks irresponsible and dangerous.
He said it was shocking that someone highly educated and once holding Federal office could make such claims.
He stressed that MA63 is the very foundation upon which Malaysia was formed.
“Does he not realise that Malaysia exists because of MA63?” he added.
Safiee warned that such rhetoric could incite dissatisfaction and sow division between regions.
“Do not let these views become like termites eating away at the harmony Malaysians have built,” he stressed when debating the Supply Bill 2026 at the Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today.
“It seems he either deliberately refuses to understand or is ignorant of the history of Malaysia’s formation—especially the essence of MA63 and the Intergovernmental Committee (IGC)—or he is driven by jealousy over Sarawak’s rapid development, which has blinded his heart and mind,” Safiee said.
He further pointed out Zaid’s comments showed a clear disregard for historical facts and the agreements that shaped the nation.
He added that Sarawak’s growing progress may have triggered envy and clouded the former minister’s judgment. — DayakDaily
