KUCHING, March 3: The state Democratic Action Party (DAP) legal team is set to file a judicial review against the Committee of Privileges and Speaker of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN).
Headed by DAP Sarawak advisor Chong Siew Chiang, the legal team will challenge the legality of the recent Committee of Privileges’ proceeding against DAP’s Padungan assemblyman Wong King Wei.
Wong was referred to the Committee of Privileges on Feb 18 for his allegedly offensive remarks made in the DUN sitting last November.
DAP Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen told a press conference today that the party’s state committee had resolved that they would take this matter to court.
“We are of the view that the Committee of Privilege has acted and sat unlawfully, which will nullify the whole proceeding. The Speaker of DUN, Datuk Amar Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar, had also acted outside his power and unfairly in the whole act of referring Wong to the Committee of Privileges,” Chong said after chairing the state DAP committee meeting.
Chong, who is also Stampin MP and Kota Sentosa assemblyman, said the judicial review would be filed within a week or two.
“It will be within the time limit for judicial review. There is a time limit of 40 days or six weeks from the date of the hearing,” he said. — DayakDaily
