KUCHING, July 8: Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak handed over fishing equipment worth about RM50,000 to Sg Apong Kotak Boat Fisherman Association to help alleviate some of the economic impacts of high inflation and rising costs of living faced by fishermen.

Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii emphasised that despite limited resources, DAP will do everything possible to assist those in need and stand with the people through difficult times.

“In the past two years or so, the raging pandemic has disrupted the livelihood of various industries, including the fishing industry, which also finds it difficult to withstand the impacts.

“Now, on top of that, they are facing rising costs of equipment and living, which has directly impacted their families,” he said in a statement today after delivering the contribution to the association with Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong.

Dr Yii also noted that fishermen face many other difficulties as recent catches have not been as good as before due to seasonal changes.

“As the fishing industry is a laborious and high-risk industry, therefore, after listening to their concerns and problems, we handed over the allocations to the association to be distributed directly to each of the existing kotak boat fishermen under Sg Apong.

“The allocation will be used to purchase the necessary fishing nets, accessories, and equipment to help them alleviate some of their burdens during this tough time,” he added. — DayakDaily
