KUCHING, Jan 11: Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen today suggested that DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) lodge a police report over the alleged receipt of RM1 million in 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) funds by Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP), saying any party that received stolen public money should be investigated under the law.
Speaking at the reopening of the refurbished DAP Sarawak headquarters here, Chong said the courts have already ruled that 1MDB funds were stolen from the public, and that anyone who received such money could be deemed as culpable as those who stole it.
“Whoever received stolen money is as guilty as the thief who stole the money. That is the law,” he said, adding that investigations into the matter had yet to be completed.
Chong said he would propose that DAPSY take the initiative to lodge a police report after the reopening event so that a proper investigation could be carried out.
“Maybe after today, we take one day off to celebrate our new office opening. But maybe tomorrow or the day after, or the following week, our DAPSY can lodge a police report so that the investigation can be done,” he added.
The allegation stems from disclosures during investigations into the multibillion-ringgit 1MDB scandal, in which funds meant for a state investment company were misappropriated through a complex web of financial transactions.
During earlier court proceedings and investigative reports, it was revealed that RM1 million linked to 1MDB was channelled to SUPP.
The matter has since been raised by opposition figures, although no court ruling has been made specifically against SUPP in relation to the receipt of the funds, and investigations are understood to be ongoing. – DayakDaily
