KUCHING, Feb 17: Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak has urged Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) to fix the street lighting along Jalan Liu Shan Bang as they have been out of order for weeks and pose a threat to motorists and pedestrians.

Michael Kong, the special assistant to Chong Chieng Jen, said residents have made complaints that the poor street lighting has created a dangerous environment for road users.

“The poor street lighting also gives rise to many dark spots around the vicinity of Mile 7, encouraging the frequency of appearances of stray dogs and sometimes drug addicts.

“There are many elderly residents who take walks to Mile 7 market early in the morning, (but) they will now have to find alternative routes to avoid these dangerous dark spots,” he claimed in a statement today.

Kong stressed that it is incumbent on local authorities to be proactive in ensuring that all public infrastructures are functioning properly at all times.

However, he observed that there was a lack of action and initiative from the local councils in doing things efficiently and effectively.

“What the people in Mile 7 are facing could have been easily avoided if the local authorities had more sense of responsibility in carrying out their roles and responsibilities.

“This is not the first time that the street lighting has stopped working and I sincerely hope that it will not recur again on a regular basis,” he added.

Kong urged MPP to take immediate action to look into the matter for the safety of the area’s residents. — DayakDaily
