KUCHING, June 26: It is important for the relevant authorities and their contractors to promptly remove all debris and rubbish during clearing works,

Michael Kong Feng Nian, who is a special assistant to Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman Chong Chieng Jen, stated that it not only sets a good example for the public, but also helps to avoid any inconveniences or problems that may arise.

In a press statement, Kong said he visited the federal quarters on Jalan Durian Burung and the concrete drains along Lorong Durian Burung 1 today after the area had experienced significant flooding on Saturday after rainfall that was not particularly heavy.

He noticed the concrete drain running along Jalan Tun Jugah is obstructed with rubbish and vegetation.

“Additionally, many of the large trees along Jalan Tun Jugah were recently chopped down, leaving the fallen trees to accumulate in the earth drain along the road.

“These obstructions impede water flow, leading to increased surface runoff and flooding in nearby low-lying areas such as Jalan Durian Burung.”

He also said the situation poses a significant fire hazard, as the tree debris and dried leaves are highly flammable, particularly during the current hot spell.

“I urge the authorities to address this matter urgently and take immediate steps to remove all the fallen trees and debris to prevent any potential incidents,” he added.

Kong also emphasised the importance of regular maintenance of concrete drains in ensuring smooth water discharge and preventing future flooding. — DayakDaily
