KUCHING, Nov 17: Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) Michael Kong Feng Nian has appealed to the authorities to take action after a resident at Lorong 22, Stampin Resettlement Scheme, was bitten by a stray dog on Saturday (Nov 15).
In a statement, Kong, who is the special assistant to Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen, claimed that it was not an isolated case, as last year, a resident from Lorong 45 was also attacked by a stray dog and passed away.
He said that over the years, Stampin Resettlement Scheme residents have reported being bitten or scratched by stray dogs, despite appealing to the authorities to capture stray dogs and carry out proper rabies testing.
At the same time, he said it was essential for authorities to adopt the Trap-Neuter-Release-Manage (TNRM) approach as a long-term solution to controlling the number of strays.
“This method has been proven effective in controlling stray populations and reducing aggressive behaviour linked to uncontrolled breeding.
“Without such a structured approach, the number of strays will continue to grow and put residents at continued risk.
“We cannot afford to wait for another tragic incident before decisive action is taken. It is time for the authorities to respond responsibly and with urgency to safeguard our community,” he said. — DayakDaily
