KUCHING, Oct 12: Waste removal is one of the regular and effective maintenance tasks that Kuching South City Council (MBKS) must hold its contractors accountable for, asserts Michael Kong Feng Nian, special assistant to Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) Chong Chieng Jen.

In a statement issued today, Kong stated that one unfortunate example is the ongoing littering problem at Lorong Ketek 3, 6th Mile here.

“This problem is not merely an eyesore; it also poses significant risks to our community.

“Litter that is piled up invites a variety of risks, such as health risks, fire risks, and environmental effects because it can get into our drainage systems and result in flash floods,” he said.

He went on to say that it is the responsibility of local governments to ensure that people have access to a clean, safe, and healthy environment.

“However, it is disheartening to witness the persistent inaction on the part of MBKS when it comes to ensuring the cleanliness and safety of our neighbourhoods.”

Kong also emphasised the importance of keeping neighbourhoods safe and clean, which should not be taken lightly.

“We strongly condemn this neglect and call for immediate action to rectify the situation.

“MBKS must take immediate action to address the littering issue in Kuching including but not limited to Lorong Ketek 3, 6th Mile.

“At the same time, MBKS needs to take proactive measures to prevent similar issues from affecting our communities in the future,” he added. — DayakDaily
