KUCHING, Dec 24: Road repair works must not only be done in a timely manner but must also be up to par, says Michael Kong, special assistant to Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) Chong Chieng Jen.
He said this referring to the already cracked road at Jalan Sungai Tapang which underwent resurfacing works just months ago.
“Yesterday, I received complaints from the public about the poor road condition at Jalan Sungai Tapang (near Treineken’s headquarters). The said road was in poor condition a while back and was recently repaired about one to two months ago.
“Despite its recent repair works, it is shocking to take note that there are now potholes along the same stretch of road. At some parts of the road, there are even crocodile cracks,” he said.
Kong said the crocodile cracks caused by underground water ponding clearly reflected that the road base was not properly done by the previous contractor.
“It is deeply upsetting that in this day and age, we still have subpar roads that require constant repair and/or resurfacing regularly; in this case within less than three months from its recent repair exercise.
“I urge the local authorities to look into this matter with urgency and to fix the said road. At the same time, there must be an effort by the local authorities to fine-tune their road maintenance system,” he said in a statement today.
Other than just awarding projects to contractors, Kong urged local authorities to also monitor and review the performance of contractors. — DayakDaily
