KUCHING, Apr 10: Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong and Bandar Kuching MP Kelvin Yii have sent food items to the poor and needy residents from Jalan Selangan Batu, Sungai Apong today.
The Democratic Action Party (DAP) Kuching team said that they had to deliver the food to the vulnerable residents as they claimed that the State Welfare Department had yet to extend assistance to them.
Yong explained that the DAP Kuching Service Centre had collected the information of some 100 households from the squatter area and had since March 31 submitted the list to the state Welfare Department to provide food assistance to them during the Covid-19 MCO period.
“Regrettably, none of the names submitted had received food assistance from the Welfare Department yet,” she said in a media release today.
Most of the residents staying at Jalan Selangan Batu, she added, were either daily paid workers or odd job workers and thus their income had been cut off ever since the MCO period was imposed.
“We understand the people’s predicament of not having enough food to feed the families and thus our party has to step in immediately to help them.
“Although our party resources are limited, we shall do our best to extend as much help as we can to help the poor and needy,” she said.
Yong emphasised that this was not time to play politics and favoritism but be united and act fast to help the vulnerable in the community.
She urged the state Welfare Department to work closely with all parties including DAP so that all food aid can be delivered to the recipients without further delay.
