KUCHING, Dec 26: Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman Chong Chieng Jen has called on the Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg to reveal the terms for the resolution to the long-standing dispute between Sarawak and Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) over oil and gas rights, following the lack of a public update in the two weeks since the announcement.

He noted that on Dec 10, Abang Johari announced to the press that a solution has been reached over the dispute between Sarawak and Petronas over the rights to oil and gas (O&G) resources in and around the State, with Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim set to announce it soon.

“More than two weeks have gone past and yet there seems to be no announcement by the Prime Minister on the solution and the so-called ‘amicable settlement’ between Petronas and Sarawak.

“All Sarawakians have a right to be informed by either the Premier on what is the so-called solution before the Premier embarks on the so-called agreement which may compromise our claims by future generations to come,” he said in a statement today.

Chong who is also Stampin MP and Padungan assemblyman, further said the Sarawak government is merely a trustee entrusted to manage Sarawak’s resources on behalf of its people.

“Thus, it is only proper that the trustee reports to the owners on how the assets are to be managed.

“As such, I called upon Abang Johari to reveal the terms of the so-called solution to the competing claims of Petronas and Sarawak over oil and gas found in and around Sarawak and not keep us Sarawakians in the dark,” he added. – DayakDaily
