KUCHING, Jan 13: Democratic Action Party (DAP) Batu Kitang is fully ready to assist families affected by the flood.
Its branch chairman Abdul Aziz Isa shared that several houses in low-lying areas of Kampung Sudat in Batu Kitang here were hit by flood last night triggered by a long day of rainfall and the king tide phenomenon.
“I went there around 11pm last night to personally check on the flood situation. Several houses and both entrance roads from Sungai Meba bridge and Jalan Stephen Yong were inundated by two-feet of floodwaters,” he said in a media release today.
Aziz, who had immediately contacted the Civil Defence Force (APM) Kuching to alert them of the situation, was informed that a few temporary relief centres have been readied to cater to flood victims in the event that the floodwaters did not subside.
“I’ve also contacted the State Welfare Department (JKM) and was given assurance that necessities for flood victims at all the relief centres have been prepared.
“The JKM has also allocated some funds to purchase other necessities which include mattresses, pillows, blankets, towels, and baby diapers,” he added.
Aziz, who is also special assistant to Chong Chieng Jen, urged communities to be on the alert for flood as Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has today issued a warning of bad weather with continuous heavy rains for some areas in Sarawak until Jan 14.
The bad weather warning with continuous heavy rain is forecasted in Kuching, Serian, Samarahan and Sri Aman, while an alert weather warning with heavy rains is issued for Betong, Sarikei, Sibu and Mukah.
