KUCHING, Sept 11: Dang Wangi district police chief Assistant Commissioner Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman sustained head injuries during a standoff at Kampung Sungai Baru, Kuala Lumpur, today, in an incident Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim described as “despicable.”

According to the New Straits Times, the injury occurred during a court-ordered operation to demolish houses in a redevelopment project covering 3.2 hectares, which includes 67 terraced houses and 14 apartment blocks.

A small group of residents reportedly resisted the operation over disagreements with the joint-venture agreement and the compensation rate of RM400 per square foot set by the Federal Territories Director of Lands and Mines Office.

In a statement today, Anwar reiterated that the government respects citizens’ rights to assemble peacefully and to express their views, and pointed out that this has been demonstrated in many gatherings in the past.

However, he stressed that freedom also comes with responsibility, and must be exercised in accordance with law, decorum and order.

“The incident of attacking and injuring a public servant, namely the Dang Wangi district police chief, by irresponsible parties with vested interests is a vile act and must be condemned.

“I have urged the authorities to immediately carry out an investigation and promptly apprehend the masterminds and assailants responsible for the injury,” he said.

Following the incident, Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Fadil Marsus confirmed during a Bernama Facebook broadcast that several individuals believed to be involved in the disturbance had been identified, including outsiders who were not residents of Kampung Sungai Baru.

“Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have warned that firm action will be taken against those responsible,” he said. – DayakDaily
