KUCHING, March 6: It was a rare sight to see cyclists and joggers leisurely circling Padang Merdeka here this morning without a single car in sight.

Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg, Jalan Pearl, and Jalan Barrack along Padang Merdeka are among the busiest roads in Kuching, but these roads were made ‘car-free’ for four hours today.

At 6am, the police had already put up barriers to ensure that no motorists could pass through.

It was raining the night before, but a fair number of people still turned up as they did not want to miss out on the opportunity to enjoy the car-free morning.

The ‘Car-Free Morning’ programme is part of the Kuching North City Commission’s (DBKU) efforts to reduce carbon emissions and traffic congestion and encourage city folk to engage in healthy activities.

The programme is held every first Sunday of every month from 6am to 10am at Padang Merdeka. ― DayakDaily
