Michael Kong, special assistant to Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman, who visited the site shortly after the accident, confirmed that both homes sustained damage to their roofs, with one house suffering a large hole in its roof and severe damage to bedroom contents.

“The occupants will have to relocate temporarily for safety reasons while repair works are carried out.

“I am relieved that no one was injured. It could have been far worse, and we are thankful that all residents are safe,” he said in a statement.

He noted that a representative from the developer arrived at the scene and assured that the company would carry out the necessary roof repairs and address structural damage.

However, Kong emphasised that the developer must also take responsibility for damaged personal belongings and household items, ensuring the affected families are adequately compensated.

“The affected families should not be left to bear the financial burden of an incident that was clearly beyond their control. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and extend our assistance to ensure they receive proper repairs and compensation,” he said.

Kong also highlighted that construction site safety must always be a top priority.

“Incidents like this raise serious concerns and must be thoroughly investigated to prevent similar occurrences in the future,” he added.

It was reported that the construction company began cleanup work immediately after the crane toppled, removing the crane’s arm from the rooftops by approximately 10.30am. — DayakDaily
