Covid-19: Two elderly men without comorbidities among 3 deaths reported as Sarawak logs 1,538 new cases

KUCHING, Aug 23: Two elderly men without comorbidities were among three Covid-19 fatalities reported as Sarawak registered 1,538 new cases today.

According to a report from the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), there were three fatalities involving three male Covid-19 patients aged between 69 and 86.


The fatalities comprised an 80-year-old man from Kuching and an 86-year-old man from Daro without comorbidities, and a 69-year-old man from Kuching who had hypertension, gout and chronic kidney disease.

With this, the Covid-19 death toll in Sarawak has increased to 501.

Sarawak also recorded a total of 1,538 new Covid-19 cases today, bringing the cumulative number of confirmed cases to 99,838.

Of the new cases reported, 86.80 per cent or 1,335 cases were asymptomatic or classified as Category 1, 12.94 per cent or 199 cases had mild symptoms (Category 2), 0.07 per cent or one case was classified as Category 3 and 0.20 per cent or three cases required ventilator support.

There were also four Import A cases comprising asymptomatic individuals returning from Indonesia.

There were also five Import B cases comprising three individuals from Kuala Lumpur and two individuals from Sabah in which two were symptomatic and three were asymptomatic.

By district, Kuching reported the highest number of new case with 615 followed by Serian (129), Lundu (115), Samarahan (103) and Pusa (102).

Districts which saw double-digit gains in new cases were Simunjan (65), Pakan (51), Bau (47), Belaga (44), Sibu (42), Bintulu (33), Sri Aman (22), Subis (21), Selangau (21), Song (20), Miri (16), Betong (16), Tebedu (11) and Asajaya (10).

Lubok Antu and Meradong districts witnessed nine new cases each whilst Kanowit registered seven new cases followed by Sarikei (6), Saratok (6), Tatau (6), Sebauh (5), Lawas (3), Beluru (2), Kapit (1) and Kabong (1).

Meanwhile, 435 Covid-19 patients were reported recovered, bringing the total number of recoveries t0 82,956 people or 83.09 per cent of the overall confirmed cases in Sarawak.

A total of 16,192 Covid-19 patients are still being treated in various health facilities throughout the State, with 48 patients in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) and 18 patients on respiratory support. — DayakDaily
