MIRI, April 2: Covid-19 disinfection operations kicked off at 10 ‘tamu’ in this district today.
The 10 ‘tamu’ are Tamu Muhibbah, Tamu Kedayan, Tamu Khas, Miri Fish Market, Tamu Pujut Corner, Taman Tunku Market, Tamu Morsjaya, Tamu Dato Ahmad Lai, Unity Food Centre and Krokop 10 Market.
Three teams comprising Miri Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) personnel, Miri City Council (MCC) health personnel, and Naim Cendera Sdn Bhd volunteers took part in the operations.
According to Miri mayor Adam Yii, the operation was carried out as a safety precaution, in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Yii was accompanied by Miri Bomba Zone 6 chief Supt Law Poh Kiong.
“Today (Thursday), Covid-19 preventive exercises are being carried out at all markets and ‘tamu’ as these premises are open to the general public to shop for their daily essentials,” Yii revealed, adding the preventive measures will continue to be carried out.
He was met this evening at Tamu Muhibbah at Jalan Padang here.
MCC has initiated preventive measures to disinfect surfaces, goods and appurtenances likely to come in contact with the general public such as at markets and ‘tamu’ since March 23.
On an unrelated matter, when asked whether Miri will proceed with Ramadhan bazaars amidst the Covid-19 outbreak, Yii said there would be likely no Ramadhan bazaars this year for Miri.
This year, the fasting month starts on April 23, nine days after the second stage of the movement control order is scheduled to end (April 14).
Prior to the Covid-19 outbreak, Miri Ramadhan bazaars have been big attractions for food hunters during the fasting month, including for those from neighbouring Brunei.
Meanwhile, for the coming Qing Ming festival or tomb-sweeping day which usually falls on April 4 or 5, Yii urged the Chinese community to avoid crowds and practise safety measures. — DayakDaily
