Covid-19: Miri top district with 52 new cases, Sibu reports two deaths

KUCHING, March 23: Miri has overtaken Sibu, reporting the most new Covid-19 cases in the state today.

There were also two deaths due to Covid-19 reported in Sibu.


According to a press statement from the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), Miri reported 52 coronavirus infections.

This total consisted of 38 cases who were close contacts to Covid-19 positive patients, five cases from the Jalan Merpati Cluster, six symptomatic individuals, two cases detected via screenings at health facility and one involving medical staff.

Sibu reported 36 Covid-19 cases today, two less than yesterday.

Other districts in Sarawak which registered new cases include Bintulu with 27 cases, Samarahan (5), Kapit (3), Sarikei (3), Julau (3), Kuching (2), Mukah (2), Limbang (2), Betong (2), Bau (1), Bukit Mabong (1) and Meradong (1).

Overall, Sarawak registered a total of 140 new Covid-19 cases, pushing the state’s tally to 14,514.

Meanwhile, the two fatalities in Sibu were senior citizens aged 69 and 71 respectively. One had comorbidities.

There were 192 Covid-19 patients who recovered from coronavirus, bringing total recoveries to 11,797 persons or 81.3 per cent of the overall Covid-19 cases in Sarawak.

A total of 2,570 patients are still being treated at health facilities and low risk quarantine centres throughout the state.
