KUCHING, Mar 30: Firefighters from Petra Jaya and Padungan stations conducted decontamination operations at Medan Niaga Satok, here, today.

The operations, which started today, is a nationwide exercise by the Fire and Rescue Department to curb the spread of Covid-19.


Sarawak Fire and Rescue director, Khirudin Rahman, said the operation at Satok involved 55 personnel including those from the Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) and Health Ministry.

“Today we start with Medan Niaga Satok under DBKU and Stutong Market under MBKS (Kuching South City Council) for zone one Kuching. All the seven zones in Sarawak (Kuching, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Sibu, Bintulu, Miri and Limbang) will conduct similar operations as soon as possible.

“With the help from local authorities and state Health Department, Bomba will carry out decontamination operation at market and other public areas,” Khirudin told reporters at the site operation.

He expressed hope that companies in Sarawak can assist the department by donating liquid solution and equipment that can help them curb the spread.

“Our current equipment and logistics are meant for normal incidents such as fire or search and rescue. This is the first time we face such threat (Covid-19) and we need to operate statewide and as we all know, Sarawak is an extremely huge state.

“This operations will also give the public confidence that the government is doing its best to contain the outbreak, first by introducing the movement control order (MCO) and now, the decontamination operation.

“We seek the public’s corporation in all this, practice social distancing and remember to maintain extreme high hygiene. We are facing an ‘invisible enemy’ right now so please help us in order to save everyone, including your love ones,” he said. — DayakDaily
